MAURICE MOORE Interview- part of Kehlani’s Tsunami Mob, writing for EXO, Trey Songz, Justine Skye
“I would be there. I would battle people. I was that kid where people felt like this kid’s dope.”
Born in Springfield, IL and raised in Ottawa, Maurice spent his formative years balancing football and music. Encouraged to ttade rapping for singing by his big sister Kelsey Vaz the siblings formed RetroFuture and garnered buzz and radio support from Hot 89.9 north of the border. Accepted to Choate Rosemary Hall Prep School in Connecticut to play football, the prospective All-American running back made a pivotal choice.
“I always thought football was the thing,” he admits. “Once I got to Connecticut, I started feeling these weird, mixed emotions. Music was tugging on my heart. I was falling out of love with the game, but I was making some of the best tracks of my life at night after practice. It ended up changing the landscape for me. I jumped off into the next stage of my career at that point.” Beyond show-stopping performances at his 2015 SXSW debut, he earned the endorsement of tastemakers such as Billboard, The Fader, Noisey, Earmilk, and more in addition to penning songs for everyone from K-Pop sensation EXO to Justine Skye and Marques Houston.
As he continues to traffic in his own lane, Maurice will undoubtedly bring a lot of people with him. “I want people to feel something when they listen to my music. I want to take them on a journey” he leaves off. His debut full-length project The Amber Room is available now.
